1st Century A.D. Granite Covered Urn- Provenance: The Estate of Gianni Versace

A magnificent and rare Roman granite funerary urn, dating to the 1st century A.D., masterfully hand-carved from a single block of dense stone, embodying the enduring monumentality and refined austerity of early Imperial Roman craftsmanship.

The vessel is of classical lidded form, its powerful silhouette defined by balanced proportions and restrained detailing, reflecting the Roman reverence for permanence, symmetry, and material integrity. Executed in granite — a material prized in antiquity for its durability and association with imperial architecture — the urn would likely have served a funerary or commemorative purpose, intended to endure across generations.  The urn is decorated with garlands and circles.

The lid is surmounted by a later bronze acorn finial, a symbolic motif historically associated with strength, longevity, and rebirth — an appropriate and sympathetic addition that enhances the urn’s sculptural presence while acknowledging its layered history.

This urn was formerly part of the celebrated collection of Gianni Versace, whose residence in Villa Fontanelle on Lake Como housed his collection of classical urns and monumental garden objects.
