An initialed, turn-of-the-century pencil portrait of a seated woman by listed French artist Louis Valtat (1869–1952), titled Élégante Assise (Seated Elegance) on the reverse. This delicately rendered drawing captures the quiet poise and refinement of its subject, executed with a confident, expressive hand. Louis Valtat, a painter, printmaker, and stage designer, studied under Gustave Moreau and Jules Dupré, exhibiting alongside the most influential artists of his era. A founding figure of the Fauvist movement, he was featured in the groundbreaking Salon d’Automne (1905) with contemporaries such as Matisse, Derain, and Manguin. His work appears in major collections, including MoMA (New York), the Hermitage (St. Petersburg), the Thyssen-Bornemisza (Madrid), and the Fogg Art Museum (Cambridge, MA), among many others. This rare, early drawing offers a unique glimpse into the hand of a modernist master.
