“Débardeurs au Travail” by Jacques Madyol – Framed Antique Belgian Oil Painting
A striking and finely detailed oil on canvas titled “Débardeurs au Travail” by Jacques Madyol (1871–1950), a prominent Belgian artist celebrated for his genre scenes, portraits, and decorative design work. This compelling scene is framed in an ornate, hand-carved gilt-wood frame, emphasizing the classical beauty and historical depth of the composition.
Madyol studied at the Brussels Academy of Fine Arts from 1893 to 1897, and quickly became a sought-after figure in European art circles. He earned high-profile portrait commissions from King Albert I (1927) and Queen Elisabeth of Belgium, and traveled extensively, painting landscapes and portraits in Brazil and Nice, France. As co-founder of “Cercle Le Labeur,” Madyol played a pivotal role in promoting the visual arts in early 20th-century Belgium.
He exhibited at major events including L’Exposition Triennale d’Anvers (1901), Brussels (1907), the World's Fair and International Fair of Brussels (1910), and in 1931 with Le Cercle Artistique et Littéraire de Bruxelles. His works are held in numerous public and private collections, most notably the Musée de l’Armée in Brussels.
This museum-quality painting is a significant example of Belgian realism and academic art, ideal for collectors of historic European oil paintings, Royal portrait artists, and 20th-century Belgian fine art.
