"Fishing In A Castle Moat" Large Oil on Canvas by Carl Rochling
"Fishing In A Castle Moat”. Framed oil on canvas by listed German artist
Carl Rochling (1855-1920). Signed in lower right corner.
This highly important example of the work of Carl Röchling dates to around 1890 and perfectly illustrates his close attention to detail and ability to paint in an atmospheric manner. It relates very closely to two other compositions by Röchling, firstly his ‘Flusslandschaft mit Bauernvesper’ sold at auction in Zurich in 2006 and secondly, his painting entitled ‘Ersturmung des Schlosses Gaisberg’ currently housed at the Museum of Breslau in Germany. All of these paintings fall into the category of his contemporary figure subjects rather than his historical work for which he is also known.
Carl Röchling was born in Sarrebruck, Germany in 1855 and it seems showed an early aptitude towards painting. At the age of twenty he was enrolled as a pupil at the Karlsruhe Academy where he would stay for five years studying under Edouard Hildebrandt. During this time he received a classic German art training with an emphasis on social Realist painting. Deciding to further his studies he entered, in 1880, the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts where his professor was the great Anton Alexander von Werner. By 1882 he had established his own studio in Berlin and was beginning to gain a reputation as a painter with extraordinary skills. The public and critics of the day were particularly enamored with his large, historical panoramas, frequently of a military nature, which were exhibited in both Germany and France at the Paris Salon. Because of the scale of his paintings he did not produce a large number of works thus his work today rarely appears on the art market. Much of his oeuvre is housed in important German collections both public and private. Carl Röchling died in Berlin May 6th, 1920.
