Grand 19th Century Della Robbia Tondo by Cantagalli – Majolica-Glazed Terracotta Medallion, Florence, c. 1880

Grand 19th Century Della Robbia Tondo by Cantagalli – Majolica-Glazed Terracotta Medallion, Florence, c. 1880

This extraordinarily large, hand-molded and majolica-glazed terracotta tondo is a stunning 19th-century homage to the celebrated Renaissance sculptor Andrea della Robbia (1435–1525). The relief medallion, painted in vibrant tones and richly glazed, echoes the iconic infant portraits adorning the loggia of the Ospedale degli Innocenti in Florence. Known as “art in the round,” the Tondo format reflects a revered classical tradition.

Stamped three times on the reverse with "Cantagalli Firenze (Italy)", this piece hails from the historic Cantagalli workshop—famed for its revival of Renaissance ceramic techniques. As noted by Italian pottery expert Walter Del Pellegrino, Cantagalli’s use of dense terracotta, worked and demolded entirely by hand, limits production and ensures exceptional artisan quality. A rare and commanding decorative piece, this medallion embodies the Florentine majolica revival and the timeless legacy of Italian Renaissance artistry.
