Grand Pair of Chinese Republic Period Armorial Zun-Form Vases, circa 1915
This impressive pair of hand-painted, parcel-gilt porcelain vases was crafted in China during the Republic period (circa 1915) specifically for the U.K. export market. Designed in the traditional Zun form, each vase features a striking central medallion portraying a warrior on horseback, a symbol of valor and nobility.
Flanking the medallions are a lion and griffin, classic heraldic guardians, while above, a triumphant figure waves a laurel branch atop a shield, surrounded by an array of flags. The fine gilding and meticulous brushwork reflect both the high craftsmanship of the era and the cultural fusion of East and West. A rare and commanding example of Republic period export porcelain with bold armorial iconography, ideal for collectors of historical Chinese ceramics and British colonial decorative arts.
