Italian Walnut, Pearwood and Olivewood Writing Desk Circa 1825

Italian Walnut, Pearwood and Olivewood Writing Desk Circa 1825

An exceptional early 19th-century Italian writing desk, hand-carved and inlaid in a sophisticated combination of walnut, pearwood, and olivewood, accented with ebonized details.  The elegant tapered-leg form supports a drawer with a fitted interior, featuring a leather writing surface and two concealed sliding-door compartments, offering an element of discrete storage characteristic of finely crafted period furniture. The hinged writing section also incorporates a stand-up vanity mirror, transforming the desk into an unusually versatile object that combines writing, correspondence, and personal grooming.  Drawer lined in later floral paper.

The combination of fine cabinetmaking, secret compartments, figured indigenous woods, and multifunctional design makes this an especially engaging example of Italian furniture from the transitional period between the late Neoclassical and early Romantic eras.
