Signed Bronze Sculpture of Resting Dog by Georges Lucien-Guyot – French Animalier, c. 1920s

Sensitively rendered and hand-cast, this signed bronze sculpture of a resting dog is the work of listed French artist Georges Lucien-Guyot (1885–1973). The animal is depicted in a relaxed, familiar pose—head gently resting on crossed paws—atop a naturalistic bronze base, capturing both anatomical accuracy and emotional subtlety.

Born to a modest family, Guyot was apprenticed to a woodcarver and honed his craft by copying 15th-century religious works. Fascinated by the natural world, he studied animals and plants at the Jardin des Plantes, translating his observations into sculpture. A well-known figure in Montmartre, Guyot hosted the famed Bateau-Lavoir salon, later joining the Groupe des Douze alongside Pompon and Poupelet. This piece reflects his mastery of the Animalier tradition, offering a compelling blend of technical skill, charm, and historical importance.
